Vol. 118 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Flooding in Dublin.

Mr. Byrne

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will arrange to have set up a committee of engineers representing his Department, the Office of Public Works and the Dublin Corporation and County Council, to investigate and suggest remedies for the flooding of cottages, houses, basements and business premises caused by heavy rains and the overflowing of rivers.

I am satisfied that the local authorities concerned have done and are doing all that is possible to remedy or relieve conditions which arise from occasional flooding in the city and environs. I do not, therefore, think that it is necessary to set up a committee on the lines suggested by the Deputy.

Mr. Byrne

In view of the fact that, though they are doing all that is possible, floods still take place and damage is done to property, does he not consider that it is time the engineers came together and made a report on the matter? Some property owners are even losing the furniture from their kitchens.

I do not think there is exceptional flooding in the City of Dublin and we are satisfied that the city engineers are doing their utmost to alleviate any flooding that takes place.

Mr. Byrne

Is the Minister aware that 100 cottages were flooded five weeks ago and considerable damage done? Certain industries were also damaged and five sections of the fire brigade were called out one night to drain the water from the residences of people who are living in the city in North Strand, Bayview Avenue, Seville place, Whitworth Row, Coburg Place, Chruch Road, East Wall, Richmond Road, Clonliffe Road, the South Quays and Ballyough Road.

I would not say that the Deputy's information is entirely accurate. That period five weeks ago was exceptional as far as rainfall is concerned.

The Parliamentary Secretary should understand that this is happening every time there is heavy rain.
