Vol. 118 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Removal of Fermoy Islands.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state (a) whether an application under the Local Authorities (Works) Act, 1949, was made by the Cork County Council for the removal of the islands at Fermoy which were deemed by the deputy county engineer for Cork to be partially and (b) whether his Department made a grant of £1,400 towards the removal of these islands.

I would refer the Deputy to the reply given to a question on the same subject on the 3rd instant. As no proposal for the relief of flooding at Fermoy was included in the list of works as finally approved by the county council for the current financial year, the question of making a grant available did not arise.

This particular project cnvisaged relief of flooding and a very erroneous impression has been created in Fermoy and the district around it in regard to the replies recently made to Deputy O'Gorman. Some £1,200 has been allocated under the works scheme to alleviate the flooding of Fermoy.

Cork County Council did send up a list of works under the Local Authorities (Works) Act, but the list was sent back to Cork County Council and they were asked to send back a final list of works that could be completed in the present financial year. The removal of islands was not included in the final list, and I imagine that the schemes were put before the elected members of the county council and that they had ample opportunity to get the county manager or the county engineer to submit this scheme.

I assure the Parliamentary Secretary that the Cork County Council accepted all those things and sent a list up to the Department. For his information, I think they come under Schedule M something.

This particular scheme was not sent in the final list.

The scheme was approved by Cork County Council and £1,200 was allocated to it by the Department.

The Deputy's information is incorrect. It was not sent up in the final list.
