Vol. 118 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Accommodation Road at Cloonkeen.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is prepared to make available a grant for a minor employment relief scheme to repair and reconstruct the accommodation road from the village of Cloonkeen to Shanballymore (E.D. Dunmore W.R.D. Tuam) to facilitate the small farmers and schoolchildren and relieve unemployment in that district.

I regret I am not in a position, for the present at all events, to make a grant for the work in question as its estimated cost is very much in excess of the proportionate allocation from employment schemes moneys available for the district in the current financial year.

Apart from this, there are a number of other proposals from the same area which have a greater degree of public utility in relation to their cost.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that because of the fact that Loorah national school was closed some time ago it has a major claim on the Department and children have to travel not over even a by-road but over a mucky passage? Because of that I think he should make every effort to see that a grant is made available for this particular work.

I am very well aware of the position there, but the Deputy's proposal would cost £1,500 and that is more money than that area is entitled to according to the number of registered unemployed in it.

Could not a partial grant be made available to put that passage in order?

I will look into it.
