Vol. 118 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Pasteurised Milk.

asked the Minister for Health if he will state whether he considers it desirable to have pasteurised milk available for all citizens; and, if so, what steps have been taken to ensure that such milk is made available for our larger cities.

I consider that until such time as bovine tuberculosis and other diseases transmissible to human beings are eradicated from our dairy herds adequate pasteurisation of milk is the only safeguard against the spread of disease from these sources.

The legislation designed to ensure a clean and safe milk supply for human consumption is contained in the Milk and Dairies Act, 1935, which as regards the production and distribution aspect of the milk supply is administered by the Minister for Agriculture and as regards hygienic and bacteriological standards is administered by me. This question of the provision of a safe milk supply in the larger cities has been and is being considered.

I regard the provision of a pure and pasteurised milk supply for human consumption as the paramount consideration and I am using every effort to hasten the solution of any difficulties which stand in the way.

As soon as sanitary authorities are prepared to make the necessary application to me, I will make Orders under the Milk and Dairies Act, 1935, prohibiting the sale of milk for human consumption in the larger cities, unless it is sold under the special designations of highest grade or pasteurised milk.

I understand from the Minister for Agriculture that there is a prospect that the City of Cork will give a lead to the country in this respect.

Is the Minister aware that in the palatial dance hall in Mitchelstown, referred to in a previous question, no flush lavatories are provided?
