Vol. 118 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - London Press Attaché.

asked the Minister for External Affairs if he will state whether he has read the newspaper reports to the effect that it is proposed to appoint a member of the British House of Lords as Press Attaché of the Republic of Ireland in London, and, if the report is correct, whether he has ascertained if the proposed appointee is under any liability to further service in the British Forces; and, further, whether it will be a condition of his appointment as Press Attaché that he will divest himself of his imperial title and any British or imperial responsibilities attaching thereto.

I have seen the newspaper reports referred to in the question. The appointment of a Press Attaché in London has been under consideration for some time, but no appointment has yet been made. When the appointment comes to be made all relevant considerations will be taken into account.

Will the Minister state if the person referred to in the question is the man who recently stated in the British House of Lords that he was a King's man?

I am not aware of the matter referred to by the Deputy, but I think I should state, in fairness to the person who, I think, is intended to be referred to in the question, that he has devoted and devotes a considerable amount of his time and energy to service to this country and that he is one of the leading officers of the Anti-Partition League.
