asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will state (a) the total amount paid to members in cash benefits during 1948 by the National Health Insurance Society, and (b) the income of the society for each of the quarters of 1948 and the first three quarters of 1949, segregating the income in each case into the amounts received from (i) insurance stamps, (ii) the Exchequer, and (iii) other sources.

(a) The total amount paid to members in cash benefits during 1948 was £1,098,637.
This does not include a sum of £54,169 paid in the quarter ended 31st March, 1948, in the form of substitutive allowances under the Social Welfare (Substitutive Allowances) Order, 1948.
(b) The income of the National Health Insurance Society is made up on a yearly basis and figures for individual quarters are not available. Dividing the yearly income by four the income in each quarter of 1948 was as shown below. It has been necessary to estimate the quarterly income in respect of the first three quarters of 1949, and the estimated figures are also shown in the manner below.
