Vol. 118 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Unemployment Insurance.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will state in respect of unemployment insurance benefits paid during 1948, the amount paid (1) to men without dependants, (2) to women without dependants, (3) in the case of men with dependants (a) to the insured persons, and (b) to their dependants, and (4) in the case of women with dependants (a) to the insured persons, and (b) to their dependants.

The particulars asked for by the Deputy are not available nor can they be supplied from the weekly accounts of payments of unemployment benefit as the amounts paid to the various classes of claimants are not segregated. An approximate division of the amount of unemployment benefit paid during the year, 1948, has, however, been made on the basis of available data and from this the particulars required by the Deputy are as follows:—(1) £378,100; (2) £158,910; (3) (a) £309,330 and (b) £173,370; (4) (a) £970 and (b) £250. The amounts include the cash supplements to unemployment benefit which under the Social Welfare Act, 1948, were replaced by equivalent increases in the weekly rates of unemployment benefit.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will state the income of the Unemployment Insurance Fund for each quarter of 1948, and the first three quarters of 1949, giving in each case the amounts derived from (a) employers' and employees' contributions, (b) the Exchequer, and (c) other sources.

The required particulars are set out in tabular form which, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to have circulated with the Official Report.

Following is the statement:—

The income of the unemployment fund for each quarter of 1948 and the first three quarters of 1949, as derived from (a) employers' and employees' contributions, (b) the Exchequer, and (c) other sources, was as follows:—
