Vol. 119 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Milling Offals.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state on what basis milling offals have been made available to producers or manufacturers of balanced rations for live stock and poultry in (a) Dublin; (b) the rest of the country, and why such offals have been made available to such firms and refused to ordinary traders.

At present all the pollard produced by the mills is allocated to manufacturers of compound feeding stuffs. The basic allocations are fixed on the output of these manufacturers in 1948.

Additional allocations are being granted within the limits of available supplies to meet the requirements of compounders whose basic allocation is insufficient to meet the present demand for the foods produced by them.

There is no difference in the system of allocation as between Dublin and country firms.

I have already indicated my reasons for the allocation of pollard to manufacturers of compound feeding stuffs in reply to questions on this subject on 15th and 21st February last, when I explained that in order to provide for calving cows, etc., all available bran is being allocated for retail distribution.

Why not do the same with pollard?

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state how many firms are engaged in the production of balanced rations for live stock and poultry in (a) Dublin City, and (b) the rest of the country.

In Dublin City, 12 firms are engaged in the manufacture of balanced rations for live stock and poultry. Throughout the rest of the country, the number engaged in the business is 80.
