Vol. 119 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Surface Dressing of County Roads.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state (a) the number of miles of county roads not surfaced dressed; (b) an estimate based on average conditions for the average cost of improving and surface dressing one mile of county road, the figure to be approximate; (c) the figure given under (b) but altered to include the strengthening of foundations in a bog area; (d) the total provision of grants for county road improvement in 1949-50, and (e) the number of miles of county roads which can be improved per year on the basis of figures given in reply to the previous parts of this question.

The information required by the Deputy is as follows:—(a) 35,055 miles on 31st March, 1949. (b) The figure of £1,850 per mile may be taken as reasonable for the improvement (including widening) and surface dressing of a typical mile of county road but it would not be possible to give an average figure because conditions as to width and other factors vary considerably. (c) £2,850 may be taken as the corresponding figure for such work including strengthening of foundations in a bog area. (d) £1,200,000. (e) Insufficient information is available, including information as to the distribution of county roads between categories (b) and (c) above, to enable this part of the question to be answered.
