Vol. 120 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Abbeyleix Water Supply.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state the reasons for the prolonged delay in carrying out a scheme for the improvement of the water supply system at Abbeyleix, County Laoighis, and whether it is still considered necessary to hold a public inquiry in connection with it; and, if so, if he will state what difficulties delay its authorisation.

Contract documents for an improved water supply at Abbeyleix have been approved, but the local authority are unable to proceed with the scheme because of difficulties arising from existing water rights. It is understood that steps are being taken by the local authorities to overcome these difficulties by the exercise of powers conferred by the Water Supplies Act, 1942. The procedure under this Act will necessitate a public local inquiry if objection is made to the local authorities' proposal.
