Vol. 120 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rents of Dublin Corporation Flats.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware that a tenant of the Dublin Corporation was recently evicted from the new flats at Fatima Mansions; and further, that due to the high rents which many tenants have to pay, other families are now in arrears and are threatened with eviction, and that, in fact, even the high rents charged do not under present circumstances fully recoup the corporation for principal and interest; and whether he will examine the position with a view to coming to the assistance of both the corporation and the tenants of Fatima Mansions.

I understand that a tenant of Fatima Mansions was recently evicted for failure to pay rent. I also understand that eight other cases of tenants in arrear were considered by the Dublin Corporation Housing Committee on the 14th instant. I have no power to interfere with the decisions of the local authority, but I am informed that any circumstances in favour of a tenant who may be temporarily in arrears are not overlooked.

The financial assistance provided by the State in the case of flats is already on a very generous scale, and I cannot give the Deputy any assurance that it will be increased.
