Vol. 121 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fanad Head Boat Slip.

Mr. Blaney

asked the Minister for Finance whether, in view of the demand by local fishermen and prospective fishermen for the erection of a boat slip at Fanad Head, County Donegal, he will make a grant available from the Employment and Emergency Schemes Vote towards its construction.

I should make it clear to the Deputy that I have no responsibility for marine works of the kind in question, except to the extent to which they prove suitable subjects for schemes for the relief of unemployment.

As the Deputy no doubt is aware, such proposals, even if otherwise suitable as employment schemes, require to be supported by a recommendation from the Department of Agriculture in the local fishing and/or agricultural interests. In this particular case, the Department reported that the fishing interests of the area concerned, both actual and prospective, are limited, and would not justify an expenditure of the order required for the provision of the facilities suggested.
