Vol. 122 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rent of Flats Increased (Dublin).

Mr. Byrne

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware that 57 tenants of reconditioned houses in Dublin have had notices served on them by the Dublin Corporation demanding further increases in the rent of their flats and that this demand is a consequence of the action of the valuation commissioners in valuing the improvements in sanitary arrangements at a higher rate than that placed on them by the corporation valuers; and whether, in view of the desire of the Government to keep down the cost of living, he will have the increase in rent reconsidered and ensure the withdrawal of the notices served on these tenants of the corporation.

I am aware of the matter referred to by the Deputy. The increases, which range from 2d. to 11d. per week, have arisen from the fact that the valuations of the flats were not fixed by the Commissioner of Valuation until recently. I have, however, no power to relieve the Dublin Corporation of the statutory obligations imposed on them by the Local Government (Rates on Small Dwellings) Act, 1928.

Mr. Byrne

In view of the difference of opinion between the two valuers, the corporation valuers and the valuers of the Valuation Commissioners, will the Minister inquire as to the method of valuation, and try to stop this campaign of increasing valuation for the slightest repair carried out on a house?

I am afraid that the fixing of rateable valuations is a matter for the Valuation Office, which is a branch of the Department of Finance, and I therefore have no power in the matter.

Mr. Byrne

I propose to raise this matter on the Adjournment of the House.

I shall have to consider whether the Minister has any responsibility in the matter.

Is the Minister aware whether an appeal against the valuation fixed by the commissioners has been lodged by the local authority in this case?

No. I have no information whatever on the subject.

Mr. Byrne

It will be lodged, because it is to come before the committee.
