Vol. 123 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price of Flake Meal.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if it is correct that the wholesale price of flake meal has been increased by £5 per ton, and whether this increase was sanctioned by him; and, if so, if he will explain the reasons for permitting this increase in the cost of living.

I am aware that the wholesale price of flake meal has been increased by £5 per ton. As the price of flake meal is not controlled the question regarding the sanction for the increase does not arise.

Am I to understand from the Parliamentary Secretary's reply that anybody who desires to put up prices is free to do so, so long as the price of the particular commodity is not controlled?

The Deputy is aware that profits and prices are under constant review but, where the raw material of a particular manufactured article rises in price, the price of the manufactured article may increase in price and if subsequent examination shows that the increase is excessive then action is taken to effect reductions accordingly.

Will the Parliamentary Secretary agree that that has not worked?

I have told the Deputy in reply to an earlier question that the future of price control is under consideration.

Review is continuing.

It is in abeyance.
