Vol. 125 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Import of American Nylons.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he is aware that American nylon stockings have been and are on sale in Dublin and, if so, if he will state the total amount of dollars allocated for this trade during the past 12 months.

No dollars have been allocated for the importation of nylon stockings. The stockings to which the Deputy's question refers are probably those offered for sale in this country under the trade name "Dupont". These, however, are of Dutch origin and manufacture and do not cost dollars. The currency required for such imports from the Netherlands and other soft currency areas, within the appropriate quota allotted for nylon stockings by the Minister for Industry and Commerce under the Control of Imports Orders, is, under existing arrangements, made available by the banks on demand.
