Vol. 126 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Castlegregory Onion Growers.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he is aware that last year severe hardship was caused to growers of onions in the Castlegregory area, North Kerry, by reason of the fact that unlimited quantities of onions were allowed to be imported with the result that producers in this area were unable to dispose of their produce; and, if so, whether he will ensure that the importation of onions will be prohibited from the end of the current month in order that producers may be able to dispose of their homegrown onions.

Mr. Walsh

I am not aware that the position was as stated by the Deputy. Last season the importation of onions was prohibited as on and from the 15th August and the ban was not lifted until the home growers had disposed of their crops. I propose to proceed on the same lines this season and an announcement as to the date of commencement of the control period will be made at an early date.
