Vol. 127 No. 1

Questions— Written Answers. - Flooding in Mayo.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware that approximately 1,100 acres of land can be reclaimed at Lacken, Ballina, by building a defending wall to prevent the tide from flooding this area, and that the local people have to cross the strand knee-deep in water on their way to Mass; and, if so, what steps he proposes to take to remedy this situation.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he is aware of the extreme hardships imposed on the people of Lacken, Killala, County Mayo, by the flooding at Lacken Strand of over 800 acres of land by the incoming tide and that this particular matter has been several times inspected by officials of the Office of Public Works and Department of Agriculture; and, if so, what action it is intended to take to deal with this urgent matter.

Mr. Walsh

Reclamation of the area in question may be an estuarine marshland problem and as such has not yet been considered. I am informed that the local people strongly desire to have a bridge built across the Cloonalaghan river. This is not a matter for my Department.
