Vol. 127 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Flooding in Tralee.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that a deputation from the residents of Rock Street, Tralee, whose houses, business premises and property were severely damaged by the recent flooding in the area, appeared before the last monthly meeting of the urban district council and furnished evidence of the extensive damage caused by the flooding and the consequent severe losses occasioned to them; whether the council has requested his Department to send an inspector to meet the officials and members of the Tralee Urban Council with a view to discussing the best means of remedying the flooding, and if he will state when the inspector will be deputed to visit Tralee.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state if his Department received a proposal from the Tralee Urban District Council for a grant under the Local Authorities (Works) Act to carry out a scheme to divert the flow of water from Bullockhill, Tralee, which is causing repeated flooding to the residents of Rock Street, Pembroke Street, Russell Street, Waterloo Place and Bridge Street, Tralee; and, if so, the date the proposal was received and the reason for not sanctioning it.

With your permission, a Chinn Chomhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 76 and 85 together. A proposal to divert a stream from Balloonagh to the Big River was submitted by the Tralee Urban District Council on the 26th June, 1951, for consideration in connection with the allocation of a grant for works under the Local Authorities (Works) Act. The council claim that the execution of this work would relieve occasional flooding in the western section of the town including Rock Street. The work involved is estimated to cost £11,000 and is of a complicated nature requiring careful investigation. The council has within the last week requested that an inspector of the Department should attend its next meeting to discuss the scheme, but it is not considered that this would serve any useful purpose pending the submission of further technical data to enable a definite opinion to be reached as to the practicability of the scheme and the benefits likely to be derived from it in relation to the expenditure proposed.

Is the Minister aware that an inspector from his Department was down there and turned down the scheme?

I am not aware of that.

Search your files.

I have looked them up very carefully.
