Vol. 128 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Hosiery and Knitwear Imports.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the value of hosiery and knitwear imported during the 12 months ended 30th June, 1951, and whether in view of the slackness at present being experienced by hosiery and knitwear manufacturers, he will indicate when the present excessive stocks will be reduced to normal and full home production resumed.

The value of hosiery and knitwear imported during the 12 months ended 30th June, 1951, was £2,221,514. I am unable to say when the present stocks will be reduced to normal, as it depends on a large number of factors which are outside my control.

With a view to assisting in the resumption of full home production, the duties on all types of imported hosiery were increased with effect from Monday last, 10th December.
