Vol. 129 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Unemployment in Knitting Industry.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware of the unemployment that now exists in the knitting industry and that workers at Bangor Erris, Geesala, Muings, Carratigue, Pullathomas and Belmullet are now working only three days per week; and, if so, if he will state what steps he proposes to take to remedy this very serious situation.

The Gaeltacht Services Division maintained full employment in its knitting industry up to the end of 1951. By that time the market for its products had not recovered and the accumulation of stocks made it necessary to cut down on production. Every effort is being made to stimulate the market and full production will be resumed as soon as the demand for knitwear goods improves.

Can the Parliamentary Secretary indicate when there is a likelihood that full and regular employment will be given? Can he specify a date when these people may expect to be employed full-time?

Mr. Lynch

It would be impossible to specify a date, in view of the fact that the lay-off is occasioned by consumer resistance. It can be only hoped that that resistance will ease off very soon and then full production will be restored in the factory.

In view of the Parliamentary Secretary's statement, may I ask him if he is aware that the girls employed in this industry will be obliged to emigrate at an early date if something is not done at once?

Mr. Lynch

That matter was taken into serious consideration when the decision was taken to put the workers on half time. It is hoped that the half-time operation will be only for a short period.

May I again ask the Parliamentary Secretary what he means by a short period? Could he mention a date, say in three months' time?

Mr. Lynch

I could not say.
