Vol. 129 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Restriction of Private Transport.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the nature of the proposals to restrict private transport referred to in paragraph 89 of the first annual report for the period 1st June, 1950, to 31st March, 1951, of Córas Iompair Éireann, and whether the Government intends to take any action on these proposals.

The proposal made by Córas Iompair Éireann in regard to private transport was that vehicles of over 2 tons, unladen weight, owned by firms operating their own transport, should be restricted in operation to a radius of 20 miles from the places of registration, excluding lorries engaged in the delivery of bread and milk. Legislation would be required to give effect to this proposal. Before any decision could be taken to initiate the necessary legislation, several questions of difficulty and intricacy would have to be considered, that of effective enforcement of any statutory restrictions being not the least difficult one. No decision has yet been reached on the proposal.
