Vol. 130 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Kerry Water and Sewerage.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that in numerous areas in South Kerry, where drinking water is not available, applications have been made to the local authority for water and sewerage schemes; and, if so, if he will give the names of such districts and state if plans have been submitted to his Department for sanction for the implementation of any or all of these schemes.

The determination of the necessity for water or sewerage schemes for particular areas and the formulation of programmes for carrying them out in their order of urgency are matters for the sanitary authority, in the first instance.

The present position in the southern portion of the County Kerry sanitary district is a follows:—

Work is in progress on a water-supply scheme at Cahirciveen. Suggestions for possible improvements in the revised plans submitted in respect of a sewerage scheme for Waterville have been conveyed to the sanitary authority and their further proposals are awaited. Preliminary plans for Rathmore sewerage scheme have been approved and the submission of contract documents is awaited. Preliminary plans for the provision of water-supply and severage schemes at Milltown have been received and have been referred back to the sanitary authority for reconsideration.

The following further schemes, arranged in order of priority, are included in the sanitary authority's programme for South Kerry—Farranfore water supply; Dungegan and Ballinskelligs water supply and Sneem sewerage. The appointments of consulting engineers to prepare preliminary plans for these schemes have been approved and submission of plans is awaited.

Is the Minister aware that the Kerry County Council made this information available to the people of Kerry months ago? There was no necessity for this question.
