Vol. 131 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Wool Crop.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state what price farmers should obtain for this season's wool crop.

This will depend on world market conditions, the trend of which I am not in a position to forecast.

Can the Parliamentary Secretary give any indication as to the price producers may expect for wool this season?

The only information that can be offered to the Deputy is the arrangement made recently by the British, whereby the price for 1951-52 is fixed at 6/0½ per lb. and 4/6 per lb. for the coming year.

Can the Parliamentary Secretary say what steps, if any, are being taken to provide a market for those who have last season's wool clip on their hands?

The price of wool is governed largely by purchases for countries such as the U.S.A., and, in view of the existing circumstances, it is not possible to indicate what effective steps can be taken.

The Parliamentary Secretary must be aware that a number of people throughout the country have last season's clippings on their hands. Surely the Department is not just sitting down and doing nothing about it.

That is the very thing they are doing.

Why did they not sell it last year?

Why did you not sell it when you took office?
