Vol. 131 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Imported Safety-Razor Blades.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state why it was considered advisable to impose a tax on imported safety-razor blades and, further, what amount of revenue it is estimated will be derived from this tax.

The recent duty on imported razor blades was imposed to protect the Irish factories engaged in the manufacture of razor blades and thereby to increase employment. Receipts from the duty on razor blades in the year 1951-52 amounted to £80,623. Since the duty is a protective one, it is expected that the increase in the rate of duty will be offset by a substantial reduction in imports.

Can the Minister say how many men are employed in the manufacture of safety-razor blades in Ireland?

About 50, I understand.

"About" is the operative word.
