Vol. 131 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rearrangement of Land.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state (a) the number of holdings rearranged by the Land Commission from 31st March, 1951, to 31st March, 1952, in each county where the poor law valuations have been brought up to standard; (b) the number rearranged where the valuations are below standard; (c) the number of allotments made to holdings not needing rearrangement, and (d) the number of allotments of turbary plots.

(a) and (b): In 1951/52 256 holdings were rearranged as follows: Donegal, 8; Dublin, 1; Leix, 6; Offaly, 7; Westmeath, 2; Wicklow, 1; Galway, 46; Leitrim, 19; Mayo, 119; Roscommon, 7; Sligo, 5; Clare, 2; Cork, 11; Kerry, 9; Limerick, 1; and Tipperary, 12. In explanation of the cases where single holdings were rearranged, perhaps I should mention that holdings held in scattered portions are often converted into compact holdings by the provision of untenanted land adjacent to the main portions in exchange for the outlying portions. It is not possible to state how many, if any, of the rearranged holdings have not been brought up to the economic standard of valuation as the poor law valuations have not yet been apportioned. However, the Deputy can rest assured that all cases were brought up to or as near economic standard as possible, having regard to the amount of land available for the purpose;

(c) 851 holdings were enlarged without rearrangement;

(d) 972 turbary plots and rights of turbary were allotted.
