Vol. 131 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Donegal Telephone Facilities.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will have installed a second telephone line between Dungloe and Burtonport, County Donegal, and thereby expedite calls on this service.

A second line will be erected between Dungloe and Burtonport as soon as circumstances permit, but, owing to the amount of more urgent construction work awaiting attention, it is likely to be some time before the work can be undertaken.

Could the Minister give any indication as to when this work will be carried out, and is he aware of the fact that, although these two villages are only four miles apart, it is necessary to wait one and a half hours before getting a local call?

I think the trouble is further back on another circuit. It is being remedied this year.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if it is proposed to provide a telephone service to Dunlewey Sub-post Office, County Donegal; and, if so, when.

The answer to the first part of the question is yes.

As regards the second part, it is hoped to complete the work of installing telephones in all rural post offices, including Dunlewey, within the next two years. I do not propose to give more precise estimates as to when installation work is likely to be carried out at particular post offices, because changes may be made from time to time to co-ordinate the Call Office work with other engineering work, and I wish to give the officers concerned full liberty of action to settle or revise the order of installation on purely engineering considerations.

It is like a dream to me. I heard that same reply a couple of years ago.
