Vol. 132 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Howth Drainage Scheme.

Mr. Byrne

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state the date on which he received an application from the Dublin Corporation to proceed with a drainage scheme from Howth to Dublin so as to provide suitable drainage for the building of houses, and further, if he will state if the proposal has been sanctioned by his Department; and, if not, the cause of the delay in sanctioning the proposal.

On 4th May, 1949, Dublin Corporation applied for sanction to the raising of a loan for the provision of a main drainage scheme to serve the northern and eastern fringe areas of the city, discharging through a tunnel at the nose of Howth.

Borrowing has been sanctioned for the section of the scheme comprising the laying of the sewer from Finglas to Malahide Road and Malahide Road to Raheny. Work on this section has begun, and when completed, the high level area scheduled for early housing development at St. Ann's can be drained to a temporary outfall pending the completion of the further section from Raheny to the outfall at Howth. The plans for the latter section are under consideration by the corporation.
