Vol. 135 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Land Project.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if, to facilitate the people of South and West Offaly, he will establish a district office of the land project scheme in Birr, and arrange for some machinery to be sent there for the area in view of its long distance from the office of the Department at Tullamore.

I am aware that the district office in Tullamore is not conveniently situated for the occupiers of land resident in the Birr area. I regret, however, that the number of applications under the land project in County Offaly would not justify the establishment of a second district office in the town of Birr.

The quantity of machinery available for land project work throughout the country generally is very limited. The Department has a unit of machinery operating in County Offaly, and in addition two private contractors are working in that county. I will arrange, however, that machinery is made available for work in the Birr area, as soon as practicable.

Did the Parliamentary Secretary say that the Department had one unit operating in the county?

The Department has a unit of machinery operating in County Offaly and, in addition, two private contractors are working in that county.

The Department has only one?

I take it that a unit is one.

Can the Parliamentary Secretary say if only one unit was in Offaly at all times? Were there more units there and have some been removed?

I take it that there is only one unit.

There are four units in Kilkenny.
