Vol. 135 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Inshore Fishermen.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware that at a recent meeting of the Howth inshore fishermen statements were made that the deep-sea trawlers will endanger the livelihood of the inshore fishermen; and, if so, if he will make a statement in the matter.

I presume that the question refers to the vessels purchased by An Bord Iascaigh Mhara in Germany. These vessels are intended to supplement the catches of inshore fishermen, and help towards reducing the present need for the importation of considerable quantities of fish. Their operations will be governed by the policy that the interests of the inshore fishermen must be safeguarded.

Is it a fact that last week in reply to a question of mine, the Parliamentary Secretary stated that these boats were due to go to sea and that there was no necessity for further repairs to the ships prior to their going to sea, whereas the Sunday Press has reported that one of them is berthed at the Port of Derry and the other at Killybegs for overhaul prior to going to sea? How then are they going to supplement the catches of inshore fishermen?

The Deputy can take it that the process will be under way before Christmas.

That is not the reply I got last week nor did the Sunday Press agree with it.

I am glad you are reading it.

We read all sorts of rubbish, you know.
