Vol. 136 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Motor Driving Convictions.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state in respect of persons who were convicted during 1951 and 1952, respectively, of driving a mechanically propelled vehicle under the influence of intoxicating liquor, the number of such persons who were (a) sentenced to imprisonment; (b) fined and (c) whose licences were suspended.

The relevant statistics for the year 1952 are not yet available. If the question is repeated in, say, a fort-night's time, I will, I hope, be in a position to give a full reply.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state in regard to the years 1951 and 1952 the number of prosecutions instituted and of convictions obtained in respect of the drivers of mechanically propelled vehicles for (a) dangerous or careless driving, and (b) driving while under the influence of intoxicating liquor.

Mr. Boland

In 1951, the number of prosecutions instituted for dangerous or careless driving was 4,437 and the number of persons convicted was 3,005. In 1952, prosecutions were instituted against 4,164 persons and 2,828 persons were convicted.

In 1951, the number of prosecutions for driving or attempting to drive while drunk was 472 and the number of convictions was 280. The corresponding figures for 1952 were 503 and 325 respectively.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state the number of accidents involving mechanically propelledvehicles which (a) involved damage to property; (b) involved personal injuries and (c) had fatal results during the year 1952 and whether, if possible, he will give comparative figures for the previous two years.

Mr. Boland
