Vol. 136 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sand for Glass Manufacture.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that sand used in the manufacture of glass is being imported while suitable sand is available on Muckish mountain, County Donegal, and if he will state what he proposes to do to end this undesirable situation.

I am aware that sand is being imported for the manufacture of glass. The possibility of using Muckish sand has been under examination for some time but no final conclusion has been reached. The problem, I am informed, is mainly a technical one.

Is the Minister aware that Muckish sand is being exported from this country for the manufacture of glass to Great Britain while we here are importing sand for the manufacture of similar glass? Will the Minister say how long this matter has been under consideration, and when it is hoped to arrive at a decision?

I cannot say.
