Vol. 137 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cement Supplies.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state the estimated amount of cement used in 1938, 1950 and 1952 for roads, bridges and other civil engineering works as distinguished from the building of houses or factories.

The particulars which the Deputy requires are not available. It may be stated, however, that the quantity of cement returned at the census of industrial production as used by the building and construction industry was 156,000 tons in 1938 and 212,000 tons in 1950. The quantities returned as used by all other industries were 63,000 in 1938 and 245,000 tons in 1950. The corresponding particulars for 1952 are not yet available. It should be pointed out that firms in which fewer than three persons are normally engaged are not included in the census of industrial production.
