Vol. 137 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rural Electrification.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is in a position to indicate if and when rural electrification will be extended to Grenagh, County Cork.

I am informed by the E.S.B. that the Grenagh area has been considered by the board on a number of occasions for development under the rural electrification scheme but has not been selected as its financial return did not compare favourably with that of other areas still awaiting development in the Cork district. The area will be considered for selection again in the future, but I am unable to state when development is likely to commence.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state when it is proposed to extend the rural electrification scheme to the Lahardane, Ballina, area.

I am informed by the E.S.B. that a local canvass is being carried out by a committee of residents in the Lahardane area which now extends north to Crossmolina and that, if the results are satisfactory, an official canvass will be carried out. The selection of the area for development cannot be considered unless and until an official canvass has been made and, consequently, I am unable to give any indication as to when development is likely to take place.
