Vol. 137 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Employment on Erne Drainage Scheme.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will make immediate representations to the Six County Minister of Commerce to employ border residents in South Donegal on the Erne drainage scheme now in course of construction in County Fermanagh.

I do not feel that any useful purpose would be served by the adoption of the Deputy's suggestion.

In view of the fact that Cementation, Limited, have now ceased their activities in Ballyshannon and that widespread and growing unemployment exists in that area with no alternative being offered, would the Minister consider it advisable to make representations to his opposite number in the North to see if some of those unemployed could be absorbed?

I understand that the question of employment is a function of the contractors.

Could the Minister not even make representations to the contractors? We cannot permit unemployment to remain there.
