Vol. 138 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sea and Air Rescue Services.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if, in view of the evidence which has come to light at the inquiry into the foundering of the passenger vessel, s.s. Princess Victoria, concerning the apparent lack of direction and co-ordination in rescue operations, he will initiate discussions with the competent authorities concerned in Belfast and in Britain for the purpose of devising a properly coordinated sea and air rescue service capable of altering and directing ships and aircraft so as to assist ships and aircraft in distress in the Irish Sea.

As the inquiry into the loss of the Princess Victoriais still proceeding, it would not be appropriate for me to make any statement in the matter referred to by the Deputy.

When the findings of the inquiry are available, I will consider whether there is any action I could take in the matter.
