Vol. 138 No. 16

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Wicklow Road Workers' Wages.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware that repeated applications made by the federation of rural workers to the Wicklow County Council for an increase in wages of the road staff have been rejected by the manager on the grounds that he is not prepared to sanction a wage for these workers in excess of £4 10s. and, if this is correct, whether he has any observations to make on the matter.

The Wicklow County Council proposed to me last October that I sanction a basic rate of 92/6 a week for road workers in that county. In view of the fact that Wicklow road workers were already being paid a higher rate than workers in every other county outside Dublin, I found it possible to sanction an increase of 5/6 a week, bringing their rate to 90/- per week.
