Vol. 138 No. 16

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Increase of Pensions.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will state if it is his intention to introduce proposals for legislation to increase the present payments to old age pensioners and widows and orphans in the immediate future.

In view of the reply I got yesterday as to what the £ wouldpurchase now against 1938, does it not mean that the old age pensions are worth only 9/8 to-day, against 10/- in 1938? Surely it is a matter which deserves consideration?

The ½d. on the lb. of sugar will make it harder.

Would the Minister consider the whole matter?

Is it not a fact that, having regard to the depreciation in the value of money, the old age pensioner now is, in fact, receiving less than 10/- per week?

When the Parties opposite are in a better mood to consider increased taxation, I will consider this.

Does the Minister want increased taxation?

We have no objection to taxation to look after this section of our people.

It must be paid for.

I am putting it to the Minister that it should be considered seriously.

I will consider it seriously and do something for them which the Party opposite did not do.
