Vol. 140 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Afforestation Work.

asked the Minister for Lands if it is intended to increase afforestation work in the Graiguenamanagh area; and, if so, if he will make arrangements to start work as soon as possible in view of the number of unemployed in that area and in Tinnahinch, County Carlow.

There is little likelihood for the present of any increase in the number of men employed at this forest. The acquisition of land in the district is difficult and the employment at present available is principally on the maintenance of existing plantations.

Would the Minister say if land has been acquired in the district in the last six or 12 months for the purpose of afforestation?

Negotiations have been completed for an area of 100 acres but I do not know that all the legal formalities have yet been completed.

Therefore it is not possible to enter on the land yet.
