Vol. 142 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Donegal Bogland.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will make representations to Bord na Móna to have the production of machine-won turf commenced on the large tracts of bogland near Ballybofey, County Donegal, and also impress upon the E.S.B. the desirability of setting up a turf-fired power station there.

I am informed by Bord na Móna that large tracts of bog in the vicinity of Ballybofey, County Donegal, have been examined with a view to assessing their suitability for machine turf production, but that the board isof the opinion that the bogs in this locality are unsuitable for mechanised turf production by the board's present methods because of their high altitudes or excessively steep gradients. The establishment of a turf-fired power station in the area is not included in the E.S.B. programme.
