Vol. 142 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Shortage of Motor Vehicle Tyres.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that a shortage of rubber tyres for motor vehicles exists at the moment; and, if so, whether he will take such steps as are necessary to ensure that a sufficient quantity to meet the current demand will be made available.

I am not aware that there is any shortage of rubber tyres for motor vehicles existing at the moment but there may, due to an unexpected demand from motor assemblers, be a certain delay in the delivery of some sizes. I am satisfied that the home production, together with the import facilities already being granted, is sufficient to meet the current demand.

Am I to understand that Messrs. Dunlops are able to supply the rubber tyres we require in this country?

It is true that the expansion of demand has reached the point at which increased production here would be necessary to meet it.

Is the Minister satisfied that this company which has the monopoly is playing its part when we have a shortage of tyres at the moment?

Apparently, I am better informed of what is happening in Cork than the Deputy. I understand that the company is already arranging to increase production.

Why limit it to that position? There is a demand for more tyres.

If there is such a heavy demand for tyres, would the Minister consider the opening of a factory somewhere else than in Dublin?

I commend the Deputy's suggestion to Wexford enterprise.

Is the Minister aware that this firm had to get a store in which to store tyres because of the fact that they had so many in stock some time ago? In fact, the firm is working overtime. I can assure Deputy Esmonde and everybody else that we in Cork will make all the tyres that they want.
