Vol. 142 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Supplies of Peas.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if it is the case that home supplies of peas suitable for processing are grossly inadequate for requirements and that substantial quantities are imported and liable to duty at the rate of 2d. per lb.; and, if so, if he is aware that this duty constitutes an unnecessary burden on manufacturing costs resulting in higher prices to home consumers; and whether, in the circumstances, he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware of the position regarding home supplies of peas suitable for processing. The acreage under peas this year shows a considerable increase over that for 1952 and it is expected that this upward trend will continue. The rate of duty is subject to review annuallyand it is anticipated that with increasing efficiency and experience in production methods growers will in time be able to meet foreign competition on level grounds. Apart from the desirability of producing our home requirements of foodstuffs I am satisfied that the nucleus of a pea production industry, both of farmers and processing firms, should be maintained which could readily be expanded in times of emergency.
