Vol. 142 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fish Processing.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will indicate the position in regard to the proposal to establish a fish-curing and fish meal plant at Downings, County Donegal.

I am informed by An Bord Iascaigh Mhara, who already carry on a herring-curing business at Downings, County Donegal, that they have not under consideration any proposal for the establishment at that centre of any additional plant for fish curing or for fish meal. I may add that there is no restriction, as far as the fishery authority is concerned, on the establishment of such plants by private enterprise.

Surely the Parliamentary Secretary is aware that Downings is a much more central station for canning or fish meal plant than the Killybegs station which is being operated by the board at the moment?

You had 18 years to provide one at Killybegs and Downings and divil a much you did.

I think the Deputy knows that canning is a proposition which is essentially one for private enterprise.

Not in the case of fish meal.
