Vol. 142 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Donegal Boatyard.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state whether consideration has been given to the extension of Meevagh boatyard; and, if so, with what result.

I am informed by An Bord Iascaigh Mhara that they have not had under consideration any proposal for the extension of the Meevagh boatyard.

Will the Parliamentary Secretary ensure that consideration will be given now to such a proposal?

I did not quite catch what the Deputy said.

I do not blame you. It must have astonished you.

Will the Parliamentary Secretary ensure that the board considers such a proposal to extend the Meevagh boatyard?

Is the Deputy suggesting that they should consider it?

The only thing I can do for the Deputy is to pass on his suggestion to the board. It is, by Statute, their responsibility.

Is it the fact that they closed down Meevagh boatyard and that it was in a state of abandoned dereliction in 1949 and was reopened in the teeth of violent Fianna Fáil opposition? Is that true or is it untrue? That is true. I found it with the roof off and the quay abandoned.

The Deputy knows that the transfer of the boatyard from Meevagh to Killybegs was carried out by the committee of directors of the Sea Fisheries Association.

They carried it back again when I was there.

Is Deputy Dillon now suggesting that that committee was dominated by Fianna Fáil?

I do not know who dominated it. I dominated it back to Meevagh when I got the chance.

We certainly did not dominate it.

You dominated it out of Meevagh.
