Vol. 143 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Number of Civil Servants.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state the total number of (a) permanent and (b) temporary civil servants employed in all State Departments in each of the years 1939 and 1953.

The available statistics relate to the number of civil servants on the first working day in January each year. In 1939 there were employed 13,481 permanent and 13,294 temporary officers, and in 1953 there were employed 17,318 permanent and 20,314 temporary officers.

All unestablished officers are grouped in these figures under the heading "temporary". The figures do not include (a) persons engaged on employment schemes; (b) persons employed on a fee basis; and (c) artisans, labourers, etc., employed on schemes or work of a temporary nature (otherthan employment schemes) who are not regarded as civil servants.
