Vol. 146 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Defence Expenditure.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will state whether it is proposed to reduce expenditure under the Defence Vote; and, if so, if he will give particulars of the proposed reductions.

To the fullest extent that savings can be effected in the Vote for Defence without impairing the efficiency of the Defence Forces, it is my intention to effect them. I am engaged in the examination of the Vote from that viewpoint but have not yet had an opportunity of arriving at definite conclusions in the matter.

Is the Minister aware that at least one candidate throughout the election campaign promised a reduction of £8,000,000 in the Army Vote?

Yes, I am aware of that.

Mr. Brennan

Would you agree with that?

And I am aware that the Leader of the Opposition said he would be able to get an army for £1,000,000.

Could the Minister say when the Dáil will have an indication of what economies the Minister proposes to effect?

Give me a breather.

I am asking a question and I have not got an answer. Can the Minister indicate when we will have that information?

I would remind the Deputy that I said I am engaged in the examination of the Vote from that viewpoint but have not yet had an opportunity of arriving at a definite conclusion to the matter.

If the question were set down in a fortnight's time would the Minister then be able to answer it?

We will probably be on holidays then.

I am asking a question and I think I am entitled to an answer.

As soon as possible.
