Vol. 147 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fodder Supplies.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if, in view of the serious shortage of fodder, he will make available supplies of beet pulp at economic rates for winter feeding for cows in the Gaeltacht and congested areas.

My information is that at present there is no shortage of fodder generally in the areas mentioned. The sale of beet pulp is a matter for Comhlucht Siúicre Éireann Teo. I cannot say what pulp they may now have for sale and it would be desirable to make inquiries from them direct.

Could the Minister state why, when pressed pulp was offered for fodder to the flooded areas around Athlone and was not accepted by the Department, that pulp could not be transferred to Donegal.

I do not quite follow the Deputy's question: Would I transfer supplies of fodder from the flooded areas around Athlone to the Gaeltacht areas of Donegal? I was going to ask the Deputy to help me to get fodder from other areas to bring into Athlone.

Perhaps the Minister is not aware that pressed pulp was offered by the Sugar Company for distribution to those who might have suffered loss of fodder due to flooding in the Midlands?

I am not so aware.

If he makes inquiries he will find that is so and perhaps he would then transfer these supplies to the congested areas where there is a serious shortage.

My information is that it was offered on four occasions.
