Vol. 148 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Banks Dispute.

asked the Minister for Finance whether, in view of the widespread inconvenience which is being caused by the early closing of banks, especially on fair days and market days, he will consider taking further action with a view to terminating at an early date the dispute between the banks and their employees.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will take further action to settle the present dispute between the banks and their employees.

I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 63 and 64 together.

Following discussions with the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Deputy Alfred Byrne, and with representatives of the Irish Bankers' Joint Committee and of the Irish Bank Officials' Association, I have arranged, with a view to the early termination of the banking dispute, that a conference will take place in the Mansion House, Dublin, on Monday next, the 21st February, at 11 a.m. The conference will be held under the chairmanship of Judge Conroy, who will be assisted by the president of the Dublin Chamber of Commerce and the president of the Irish Conference of Professional and Service Associations.

Both parties to the dispute have agreed on a procedure and have undertaken in the public interest to enter the conference in a constructive spirit and to make a determined effort finally to end the dispute.
