Vol. 148 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Local Fire Services.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will consider the desirability of introducing proposals for legislation to grant power to local authorities to enable them to obtain financial contributions from the fire insurance companies towards the cost of maintaining local fire services, in view of the fact that the efficiency of such services in preventing serious fires and limiting loss of property is of direct financial concern and benefit to such companies.

The question of securing contributions from insurance companies towards the cost of local fire services has been examined on several previous occasions. It is considered that legislation on the lines suggested by the Deputy would not be practicable.

Is the Minister aware of the fact that local authorities have to provide an enormous amount of money each year for this very important service and is the Minister prepared to say that these fire insurance companies are to continue making vast profits at the expense of the unfortunate ratepayers?

As I have already said, the matter has been examined on many occasions and it has not been considered that it is one which is practicable. However, if one of these companies wishes to enter into a private agreement with the local authority to contribute towards the maintenance of fire appliances, I am sure that no objections will be raised.

Is it not right we should expect the Minister for Local Government to give a lead to help the local authorities to bring down the rates wherever possible? This is a particular instance where these companies are fleecing the people.

I think that is a matter which could probably be addressed to another Minister.
