Vol. 148 No. 7

Written Answers. - Imports of Insulated Wires and Cables.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state in respect of the 10,477 cwt. (value £209,478) of insulated wires and cables (group E, class III in the trade statistics) imported over the period January-November, 1954, the weight and value of insulated cables only (a) on which import duty was paid; (b) which were imported free of duty under licence, and (c) by definition were not subject to duty.

The provisional figures quoted by the Deputy in respect of imports of electric wire and cable have now been adjusted to read 10,583 cwt. and £210,043. These figures include (a) 489 cwt.—value £12,434—imported on payment of duty; (b) 475 cwt.—value £16,200— imported free of duty under licence; and (c) 9,619 cwt. —value £181,409— which were not liable to duty.

The official records do not distinguish between insulated electric cable and insulated electric wire.

The remainder of the questions will appear on tomorrow's Order Paper.
