Vol. 148 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Flooding Compensation.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state (a) the total amount awarded by the Lavery Commission to date to applicants for compensation in respect of loss or damage suffered by them in the recent flooding in the Dublin area; (b) the category of loss or damage in respect of which Grants-in-Aid have been made; (c) the category of loss or damage excluded by the commission from Grants-in-Aid, and (d) the amount claimed by each applicant listed by name of street or road only and the amount actually awarded in respect of each such individual claim.

(a) The amount of the expenditure incurred by the Dublin Flood Relief Committee in alleviating distress caused by the flooding will be the subject of an announcement in the Dáil during the present month when leave to introduce the necessary Supplementary Estimate has been granted; (b) and (c) I would refer the Deputy to the statement issued on the 21st ultimo by the committee; (d) in many cases no particular amount was claimed, in others claims were based on the assumption that the committee was concerned with the payment of compensation apart from the question of alleviating distress. Lists compiled on the lines indicated by the Deputy would not, therefore, convey a true picture. In any event I understand that their compilation, in so far as it would be possible to compile them, would materially slow up the work of the committee at this stage.
